The Sunscreen Rules Worth Following (and the Ones to Ignore)

The number on a sunscreen bottle measures how well it stops you burning. It tells you almost nothing about the radiation that ages your skin. That gap sits underneath most sunscreen advice, and it’s the reason so much of the standard guidance is half right.

I went through the common rules one at a time and checked each against regulatory texts and the primary literature rather than against other blog posts. A few turned out to rest on a study that doesn’t say what it gets cited for.

SPF Is a Sunburn Measure

SPF is a ratio of how much UV it takes to redden protected skin versus unprotected skin. Sunburn is driven overwhelmingly by UVB, so SPF is effectively a UVB number. In the standard test, UVB supplies roughly 85 to 90 percent of the reddening effect and UVA supplies the rest.

UVA is the problem. About 20 to 30 percent of it reaches the deep dermis, against 10 percent of UVB, and daily summer exposure is roughly 96 percent UVA. It breaks down collagen directly at the fibroblast level and produces the pigment changes that show up as sun spots. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies UVA as a Group 1 carcinogen, a point that skincare writing tends to skip once it has filed UVA under aging.

A high SPF with weak UVA coverage protects you from the visible consequence while the slower one keeps running underneath.

“Broad Spectrum” Means Different Things in Different Places

In the United States, broad spectrum is a pass/fail test. The product needs a mean critical wavelength of 370 nanometers or greater, and that’s the whole bar. In the EU, a product carrying the UVA logo has to clear that same 370nm threshold and also deliver a UVA protection factor of at least a third of its SPF.

The practical difference is that on an EU bottle the SPF number sets a floor under the UVA protection, and on a US bottle it doesn’t. Two American broad-spectrum SPF 50 products can differ substantially in real UVA performance while carrying identical labels. The 2011 FDA labeling rule considered a graded star system and rejected it.

Japan, Korea, and China use the PA+ system, which tops out at PA++++ for a UVA protection factor of 16 or more. That top grade is an open-ended bucket, so a product at 16 and a product at 30 look the same on the shelf. Some Asian brands print the underlying number voluntarily.

The American Filter List Finally Moved

For twenty-five years the US ran on a filter list that hadn’t gained a new member. On 9 June 2026 the FDA added bemotrizinol to the over-the-counter monograph at up to 6 percent, effective 9 August, with eighteen months of exclusivity to the company that filed for it. It’s a photostable broad-spectrum filter that Europe has used for years.

You’ll see this reported as the first new sunscreen ingredient since 1999, which is true of the monograph route specifically. The FDA separately approved ecamsule as a new molecular entity in 2006 through a product-specific application, which is why Mexoryl SX turned up in a handful of US products and nowhere else. A monograph listing opens a filter to every manufacturer, while the other route locks it to one company’s formulations.

Europe permits around 29 filter substances against roughly 15 that are practically usable in the US. That’s a real gap, though smaller than the usual framing suggests. The direction of travel also cuts against the story: the EU has spent the last few years restricting and removing filters rather than adding them.

The Long UVA End

Most filters that cover UVA run out somewhere around 380nm. Two go further. L’Oréal’s Mexoryl 400 peaks at 385nm and covers 360 to 400, and Pierre Fabre’s TriAsorB was authorized in Europe a year earlier with coverage reaching into visible light.

Mexoryl 400 gets described as exclusive to La Roche-Posay’s UVMune 400 line. It isn’t. L’Oréal owns the patent rather than the brand, and the same filter shows up in cheaper products across the group, including L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal SPF 50, whose ingredient list carries it openly. You don’t have to pay pharmacy prices to get it.

Sunscreen Does Get Used Up

There’s a claim going around that sunlight doesn’t consume sunscreen. On this account it only gets rubbed and sweated off, so reapplying is about restoring an intact film rather than replacing spent molecules. That holds for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and roughly holds for well-formulated modern products. It falls apart for avobenzone on its own, which is photounstable enough to lose most of its molecules within an hour of sun exposure.

Formulators solved this years ago by pairing avobenzone with stabilizers, and a well-built product holds up fine. The trouble is that the label won’t tell you which one you have. Reapply every couple of hours when you’re actually outdoors and the question stops mattering.

Clothing Beats Sunscreen, With a Catch

Fabric is the strongest tool available, and it gets the least attention because there’s nothing much to sell you. The catch is that ordinary clothing varies enormously. A plain white cotton t-shirt sits around UPF 5 to 7, dropping to about 3 when wet, because the fibers swell and open the weave. Dark, tightly woven synthetics reach the 30 to 50 range and hold it.

Rated garments are tested, which is the whole point of buying them, and they degrade with use. A cotton and Lycra knit measured UPF 23 relaxed and 10 at 15 percent stretch as the pores widened. A rash vest that has gone thin and saggy has stopped doing the job it was bought for.

Shade and a hat outrank any decision about which of two good sunscreens to own. Sunscreen is for the parts you can’t cover.

Cloud and Glass

Cloud cover gets described as blocking UVB while letting UVA through. The mechanism doesn’t work that way, since cloud droplets scatter UV in a roughly wavelength-neutral fashion. The one direct spectral measurement of a uniform cloud layer actually found slightly more attenuation in UVA than in UVB. The useful version of the advice survives anyway: the EPA puts transmission at 89 percent under scattered cloud, 73 percent under broken cloud, and 31 percent under overcast, and broken cloud can briefly push UV above clear-sky levels by scattering off the cloud edges.

Glass is more clear-cut. Ordinary window glass blocks essentially all UVB and passes around 74 percent of UVA, so sitting by an office window is not protection. Car windshields are laminated, and the interlayer absorbs UVA well enough to block about 99 percent of it. Side windows are tempered rather than laminated, which is where the documented pattern of driver-side sun damage comes from.

Sunscreen and Vitamin D

The standard line has been that real-world sunscreen use doesn’t meaningfully affect vitamin D status. That rested on studies predating the current generation of high-SPF products, and it now looks too confident.

The Sun-D trial, published in the British Journal of Dermatology in December 2025, randomized people to daily SPF 50+ on any day forecast to reach UV index 3 or higher, and ran for about a year. Insufficiency, meaning 25(OH)D below 50 nmol/L, came out at 45.7 percent in the sunscreen group against 36.9 percent in the control, with an adjusted between-group difference of 5.2 nmol/L. The effect is small, but it’s real, and this is the first trial to test the products people are now told to use every day.

The sensible response is the split I’d argue for on other grounds anyway. Cover the face, neck, and hands, which take the cumulative dose and show it first, and let your arms and legs get sun. That’s the same approach I described in my sun exposure routine, and it’s worth pairing with actual measurement rather than assumption, which is what the longevity blood panel is for.

Rules Worth Ignoring

Blue light from screens is the easiest one to drop. A 2023 systematic review went looking for evidence that device emissions cause pigmentation, redness, melasma, or photoaging, and found none. One study ran a high-intensity screen at 20 centimeters for eight hours a day across five days on melasma lesions with no worsening. Visible light genuinely does drive pigmentation at solar doses, particularly in darker skin, which makes it a sunlight problem rather than a laptop problem.

The warning against layering two sunscreens has no primary study behind it. The paper usually cited in support mixed zinc oxide into filter blends in a lab rather than testing one finished product over another, and its own control found little change without the zinc. SPF isn’t additive, so you get roughly the stronger layer rather than the sum. That’s a different thing from layering causing harm.

Decanting sunscreen into a travel bottle is treated as forbidden because stability testing is done in the shipping container, so a decanted product falls outside what was validated. That’s reasonable as a precaution. There’s still no published measurement of a decanted sunscreen losing protection, and if the alternative is bringing none, decant it.

The three-finger rule is a garbled version of something real. The published rule is two fingers, from a 2002 BMJ letter, applied to each of eleven body regions rather than to the face alone. The quarter-teaspoon figure for a face is sound: SPF is tested at 2mg per square centimeter, and a quarter teaspoon covers about 616 square centimeters against a face of roughly 350 to 620.

Skepticism about foundation with SPF is the one piece of conventional wisdom here that holds up. The labeled SPF assumes a dose nobody applies in makeup, and the protection curve is logarithmic, so a fraction of the dose buys a disproportionately small fraction of the protection.

What I’d Actually Do

Buy a European or Asian high-protection sunscreen and stop researching. Above a certain quality floor, the gap between products is smaller than the gap between using one daily and using one now and then. ISDIN, La Roche-Posay, Avène, and Bioderma are in every pharmacy here, and the cheaper L’Oréal products carry the long-UVA filter if you want it specifically.

Put a quarter teaspoon on face, neck, ears, and the backs of your hands each morning, and reapply every couple of hours when you’re outside for real. Wear a rated shirt and a hat for sport and the beach, treating them as the primary protection rather than the backup. Leave your arms and legs alone the rest of the time.

The rest of it is detail that matters more to formulators than to you.
