Meal Prep in Barcelona: How I Hit My Protein Target Without the Sunday Marathon

Published: October 31, 2026Leave a Comment

HealthyFoodBCN page for athletes: Hit your macros without the Sunday marathon

Fat loss and recomposition come down to two numbers you control with food: daily calories and daily protein. Training sets the stimulus, but the plate decides whether you lean out or stay where you are. In Barcelona you have three realistic ways to hit those numbers every day, and each one trades time against cost and accuracy differently.

Option 1: Cook It Yourself on Sunday

Cooking your own meal prep gives you full control over ingredients and the lowest cost per meal. A typical batch is chicken thighs or breast, rice or potatoes, and a tray of roasted vegetables, split into five containers.

The Barcelona-specific version of this plan runs through the Mercadona and Bonpreu aisles, and the Boqueria if you’re feeling ambitious. Chicken, eggs, canned tuna, Greek yogurt and lentils are cheap here, and the fish counters at any neighborhood market are excellent. My guide to buying food in Spain covers where to shop.

Shopping, cooking, portioning and washing up takes most of a Sunday afternoon, and by Thursday the fourth container of identical chicken and rice is where most streaks end. The work lands on the same afternoon every week, and that’s what makes the plan hard to keep.

Option 2: Grab-and-Go Healthy Food

Barcelona has no shortage of poke places, salad bars and bowl shops. If you count protein, you rarely know the grams. A poke bowl’s protein varies widely from shop to shop, and the sauce can add several hundred calories you never logged. At lunch prices, five days a week, the bill climbs fast too.

If you track macros, restaurant food turns every meal into an estimate, and estimates drift upward over a few weeks.

Option 3: Fresh Prepared Meals Delivered to Your Door

HealthyFoodBCN delivers fresh, protein-based prepared meals across Barcelona and the surrounding towns. A chef cooks them, they arrive chilled in heat-sealed trays, and you reheat by piercing the film and warming the tray.

I wrote about how the service works and who it suits in my earlier post on the best healthy food meal plan in Barcelona.

Portions sized to you

The chef asks for each adult’s age, weight and activity level before cooking. Your portions come out of that, so a lighter person doing easy cardio and a heavier person training jiu-jitsu five days a week get different calorie and protein loads from the same menu. You can also give a specific daily target, such as 2,400 kcal and 180 grams of protein, and the plan is built around it.

Macro breakdowns you can log

The kitchen can share calorie and macro breakdowns per meal, which makes logging in MyFitnessPal a copy-and-paste job. For a cut, that’s the feature that matters most.

Variety that keeps you on the plan

Sticking to the plan is what decides a cut. The menu rotates through harissa chicken, miso salmon, jerk-spiced bowls and Mediterranean grain plates, so the fifth day of the week doesn’t taste like the first.

Pricing

One meal a day runs €20 to €28 per person, with VAT included and a five-day-a-week minimum. Two meals a day run €35 to €43 with a three-day minimum, and a full day of eating runs €49 to €57. Delivery is charged separately, from €12 depending on your area. Set that against what you spend on lunches and delivery apps now. The plans run on a weekly rhythm, with deliveries on Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon covering the five working days.

Languages and delivery area

The site works in English, Spanish, Catalan, Russian and Ukrainian, so you can ask questions and fill in the quote form in whichever language you think in. Delivery covers Barcelona city and towns around it, including Sant Cugat, Badalona, Castelldefels, L’Hospitalet and Esplugues.

How I’d Set It Up for a Cut

Start with your numbers. A common starting point for fat loss is a daily deficit of 300 to 500 calories below maintenance and protein around 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of body weight. Put those numbers on the quote form and let the kitchen build to them.

Cover the meals where you lose the most control. For most people that’s lunch on workdays, because it’s the meal you eat in a rush, near tempting food. One meal a day delivered, with breakfast and dinner cooked at home, already removes the worst of the guesswork.

Keep Sunday free. Once the weekday meals arrive on schedule, the Sunday cook-up disappears and you get that afternoon back.

Log everything for the first three weeks, compare your scale trend against your target, and adjust the plan with the kitchen. Recomposition is slow, so judge it on a four-week average of body weight and how your clothes fit.

Where to Start

The menu and quote form are at healthyfoodbcn.com. Tell them your goal, your training days and your target numbers, and you’ll get a quote built around them.
